Asian Festival May 10 at Garfield Park
Asian American Alliance, Inc. (AAAI) and Indy Parks & Recreation are partnering to present the inaugural Asian Festival on Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 11 AM to 5 PM at Garfield Park, 2345 Pagoda Drive, in Indianapolis.
This occasion marks the 105th birthday of the distinctively Asian-inspired Garfield Park Pagoda, which will serve as a centerpiece for the festival. Festival-goers can sample food and buy merchandise from vendors from all over Asia—China, Korea, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Burma, Cambodia, Thailand, India and Indonesia—all under one roof.
Fine artwork and cultural regalia from Asian artists in Indianapolis will also be on display at the Garfield Park Arts Center. In addition, cultural entertainment and activities will be offered throughout the day. The festival will end with a special Bridal Fashion Show, featuring bridal clothing unique to each Asian culture. Admission is free.
The festival is held in conjunction with the Asian Pacific-American Heritage Month, the month of May, as designated by Congress. During the festival, AAAI will award scholarships to deserving IPS students and Asian-American leadership students.
AAAI is a local, non-profit organization with a mission to inspire Asian Americans to lead and serve. In 2006, Garfield Park Arts Center and AAAI, along with the Barangay Club of Indiana, established a partnership to present the Smithsonian exhibition of Filipino photography by Ricardo Ocreto Alvarado. For more information about the Asian Festival, visit http://www.indyparks.org, or call 317-327-7220.

'Our Dad is in Atlantis' at the Phoenix Theatre

The Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis will produce Javier Mapica’s coming-of-age story, Our Dad is in Atlantis (Papá Está en la Atlántida), in its Frank and Katrina Basile Theatre, May 8 to June 8, 2008 (no performance May 16). The two-person cast will perform the play in its original Spanish at seven of the performances and the English translation, by Jorge Ignacio Cortinas, at the other 12 performances.
Composer/accordionist David Wierhake will compose and perform original music to flavor the action and aid scene transitions. The Phoenix Theatre has made a commitment to serve the Spanish-speaking Indianapolis population by programming a bilingual production annually. All Spanish-language performances will be priced at $15.
Ten vignette-like scenes make up the play and lay out both the emotional and actual journeys undertaken by Little Brother and Big Brother. After the death of their mother, the brothers’ father decides to leave Mexico to find work in the United States and sends the boys to their disciplinarian grandmother in a small rural town. The brothers soon discover that their classmates consider them brats from the big city, and their grandmother doesn’t especially relish having them around. When their grandmother dies, the two are sent to live with an aunt and uncle, who put them to work in the family store. As their loneliness deepens, the brothers decide to set out to cross the border to find their father.
Directed by Bryan Fonseca, the cast includes Julio Chavez as Big Brother and Mark Presto as Little Brother. David Wierhake is the composer/musician, performing on an Italian-built 48-bass Monterrey piano accordion. James Gross is the set designer, and Bryan Fonseca is the lighting designer.
Our Dad is in Atlantis will be performed Thursdays at 7:00 PM, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM, and Sundays at 2:00pm. Single tickets for performances in English are $25 for those 25 and over, $15 for those 24 and under. Tickets are $15 during CheapSeats week, May 8-11. The play will be performed in Spanish on May 22-23, 29-30, and June 1, 5-6. All Spanish-language performances will be priced at $15. Group rates for adults are available for groups of 15 or more, as are discounts for buying out the house.
The Phoenix Theatre is located in Indianapolis at 749 North Park Avenue in the Massachusetts Avenue Arts and Cultural District. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 317-635-PLAY (7529), or visit the Phoenix Web site at: www.phoenixtheatre.org. Phoenix Theatre on AroundIndy.com...
